Vietnam has just concluded its extended Tet holiday, recording a 17.8% increase in air travel compared to last year. Over 2.5 million passengers traveled through the country’s airports in just nine days, supported by more than 18,600 flights, reflecting a strong recovery in both domestic and international tourism.
• 1.35 million international passengers, marking a 23% year-on-year increase.
• 1.14 million domestic passengers, up 12% from the previous year, with the increase in domestic travel also signaling a recovery in local consumption, supporting broader economic momentum.
• Chinese visitor arrivals rose by 35%, further reinforcing Vietnam’s growing appeal as a regional travel destination.
In response to this rising demand, Vietnam is accelerating key aviation infrastructure projects to expand capacity and enhance efficiency:
• Tan Son Nhat International Airport’s Terminal T3: Construction progress has reached 83% completion, with operations set to commence by April 30, 2025, three months ahead of schedule. Tan Son Nhat’s domestic terminal is currently operating at 42% its designed capacity of 28 million passengers per year, making this expansion critical. Once operational, Terminal 3 will add 20 million in annual capacity, releasing the capacity constraint
• Long Thanh International Airport: The project is advancing as planned, with commercial operations targeted for September 2, 2026. Upon completion of the first phase, the airport will have an annual capacity of 25 million passengers, with 80% of international flights shifting from Tan Son Nhat to Long Thanh. This transition is expected to significantly strengthen Vietnam’s role as a key aviation hub in Southeast Asia. To support connectivity, key infrastructure projects such as the Ben Luc – Long Thanh Highway, Bien Hoa – Vung Tau Highway, and Ring Road 3 are also on track for completion, ensuring seamless access to the new airport.
With travel demand continuing to rise, Vietnam’s proactive infrastructure development is set to support long-term tourism and economic growth.
