- Vietnam has reached a major milestone with Nhon Trach 3, the country’s first LNG-fired power plant, now successfully connected to the national power grid. As part of the Nhon Trach 3-4 complex with a total capacity of 1,624 MW and total investment capital of $1.4 bn, this project is set to enhance power supply reliability and support growing industrial demand. Nhon Trach 3 is scheduled to enter officially commercial operation in June 2025, followed by Nhon Trach 4 in December 2025. Once fully operational, the two plants will generate 9 billion kWh annually, supplying 3% of Vietnam’s annual total electricity consumption.
- The operation of Nhon Trach 3 and 4 is laying the foundation for the further development of LNG power, a key priority in Vietnam’s energy transition. With 22.4 GW of LNG capacity planned by 2030, expected to account for 14% of the national power mix, the country is advancing towards a more resilient and diversified energy sector. To facilitate this growth, the government has removed critical regulatory barriers, implementing pricing frameworks, LNG cost pass-through mechanisms, and guaranteed power purchase commitments, further boosting investor confidence.
- This milestone reinforces our previous analysis on Vietnam’s proactive approach to energy security, highlighting its efforts to ensure a reliable power supply for foreign investors. The country is not only addressing immediate electricity needs but also laying the foundation for long-term energy stability, reinforcing its position as a trusted partner for global manufacturers.
