Vietnam welcomes French President Emmanuel Macron – a visit that further strengthens bilateral ties.
Macron’s official trip to Hanoi marks the first visit by a French head of state in nearly a decade, and places Vietnam in a unique diplomatic position: it is now the only country in the world to have hosted four out of five permanent members of the UN Security Council (P5) within the past two years—namely the United States, China, Russia, and France.
This visit builds on the upgrade of Vietnam – France relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership in late 2024. A series of new agreements were signed across key sectors, including aviation, defense, satellite technology, nuclear energy, and transport infrastructure.
Macron’s stop in Vietnam is part of a broader Southeast Asia tour, which also includes Indonesia and Singapore, underscoring France’s deepening engagement with the region.
Amid rising uncertainty surrounding U.S. trade policy under Trump 2.0, both Vietnam and France are seeking to reduce reliance on any single market. The cooperation reflects a shared interest in diversification – supporting Vietnam’s development goals while expanding France’s strategic and economic footprint in the Indo-Pacific
