Vietnam – US Trade Talks: Momentum Builds
The second round of Vietnam – US negotiations on a reciprocal trade agreement wrapped up constructively, with both sides identifying key issues and agreeing to resume discussions in early June. While differences remain, the tone of dialogue reflects a clear willingness to find common ground.
Vietnam enters the next round with growing leverage, supported by deepening strategic and commercial ties:
- Deals are taking shape—Vietnam is accelerating the purchase of two US-made helicopters from Lockheed Martin and has signed a nuclear energy cooperation agreement with Westinghouse Electric, reinforcing alignment on key sectors.
- Vietnam is addressing US trade concerns, stepping up enforcement against origin fraud on exports to the US. A recent government directive shows increased oversight—an important signal of Vietnam’s commitment to fair and transparent trade.
- US investment is expanding, with the Trump Organization breaking ground on a $1.5 billion tourism and resort complex in Hung Yen and planning a Trump Tower in Ho Chi Minh City.
These developments strengthen Vietnam’s bargaining position—both politically and commercially—and underscore a shared interest in long-term partnership.
Our base case remains a negotiated tariff outcome of 20–30%, as both countries work toward a more balanced and strategic trade relationship.
