The airport has been designed to reach 4F level and be an important international airport of the country, towards becoming one of the important international air transit hubs for the region.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said the Long Thanh International Airport is one of the 16 most remarkable airport projects in the world.

On November 11, 2020, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 1777/QD-TTg approving the investment project to build Long Thanh International Airport, phase 1 with a total investment of about VND109.111 trillion (US$4.72 billion), which is scheduled to be completed and put into operation in 2025.

The first stage of the project is divided into four component projects. Upon completion, the Long Thanh airport will have one runway, one passenger terminal and auxiliary categories with a capacity of 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo per year.

Specifically, in the first phase, a runway measuring 4,000 meters long and 75 meters wide will be constructed, together with a taxiway and apron system to ensure the operations of airplanes, as well as a 123m-high air traffic control tower.

Once fully constructed, the airport will have four runways and four terminals capable of handling 100 million passengers and five millions tons of cargo per year./.
