Qualcomm plans 3rd largest R&D center in Vietnam

U.S. telecoms giant Qualcomm wants to build its third largest research and development center in the world in Vietnam, with a focus on AI development.

Jilei Hou, Qualcomm’s senior vice president of engineering, spoke about the proposal at a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung in Hanoi Wednesday.

The company’s two biggest research and development centers are in India and Ireland.

It has expertise in 5G technology and is expanding to semiconductors and AI services. It has a market capitalization of around $153 billion.

Qualcomm has representative offices in Hanoi and HCMC. Last month it bought MovianAI, a subsidiary of VinAI that develops generative AI.

“Through the acquisition of MovianAI, Qualcomm demonstrates a strong commitment to contributing to AI research and development, as well as nurturing AI talent in Vietnam,” Hou said.

Dung commended Qualcomm’s contributions to Vietnam, particularly its efforts to foster innovation.

He wanted it to develop a clear strategy for operating and expanding MovianAI to support Vietnamese experts, startups and businesses in AI and semiconductors, enabling them to integrate into the global value chain.

He also encouraged the company to take advantage of the incentives Vietnam offers the semiconductor and AI industries to expand research and development.

He highlighted the importance of a dedicated program to train young Vietnamese talent in AI technology from an early age.
